I have some really cool vintage tube amps in my bands rehearsal space. This used to be a P.A. but sounds sweet threw a 12" speaker and a Gibson Hollow body.

  1. Ah tube amps. Nothing sounds better...

The flash makes them feel more amateur than the composition would suggest. Maybe make a flash diffuser out of tissue or tracing paper? Just soften them up a bunch.

You have the eye, just tweak the camera settings a bit. Keep it up.

  2. Thanks for the tip, I will try some more this week. My drummer builds tube amps so I wont run out of subjects to shoot.

  3. Did you get your tripod yet? That will help as well. Brennan is madly in love with his gorilla pod.. so I am sure he would point you to one of those as well.

For a shot like this.. you might do better with no flash but bouncing a light off a wall. Back when I had all my snakes and lizards I would use the cheap direction spotlights and bounce the light off the wall or ceiling to light up what I was shooting. You can get them very cheap at any hardware store and can try a variety of bulbs for neat effects.

  4. I do have the tripod, but I'm sometimes too lazy to set it up...I'm going to try bouncing some light on a shoot I'm doing on Wednesday.

  5. you could ask the band to wear white t-shirts and bounce it of from them or use a tripod and longer shutter speeds wo flash or try a strong lamp and direct the light through a sheet on the subject...
